What was the challenge/problem addressed?
Crop maintenance is carried out using special machines that move in technological tracks. The need for plant protection products and fertilizers is increasing to produce higher yields. Soil compaction and degradation are also increasing as machinery is becoming heavier due to increase of its technical performance. The problem of soil compaction is relevant for every farmer however, the level of compaction depends on composition of soil. It is very important for farmers to eliminate soil compaction and restore productivity of soil in technological tracks therefore, an innovation was developed to meet farmers’ need.
Comment as-tu résolu le problème?
EIP group was formed and project activities were done on farms from different regions of Lithuania to have possibility to apply the innovative technology in different types of soil. At first, level of deterioration of physical soil conditions of soils covering the largest area and used the most intensively was determined, the dependence on climatic conditions was evaluated and level of soil degradation was determined. Puis, fields for testing of integrated tillage were prepared and testing of agrotechnical measures was carried out. Partners used this technology on their farms. Precision testing was carried out to determine the level of soil compaction and degradation, level of restoration of indicators of soil quality, and impact the innovative technology would have on yield in a long-term perspective.

Technological innovation was developed during the period of implementation of the EIP project. Extent of soil compaction in technological tracks was estimated on different farms in different types of soil. The results revealed that the need for an immediate innovation existed. Physical and mechanical properties of soil deteriorate because of soil compaction, especially these processes became more active in the conditions of a drying climate. Compacted soil accumulates and retains 3-4 per cent less moisture. Technological innovation was intended for restoring properties and productivity of damaged soil in technological tracks, levelling the surface, and unifying physical condition of general field soil. A prototype of an adjustable-width equipment used for elimination of soil compaction in technological tracks eliminated compaction in arable soil layer and levelled the surface.
Quels sont les facteurs de succès pour résoudre le problème?
The results achieved by the EIP group and linkage of scientific knowledge and practical experience would allow to solve problems of reduction of soil degradation in conditions of intense farming, would help to solve economic and ecological problems in the regions of the country, would allow to save costs of fossil fuel and to reduce environmental pollution.

It is particularly important to precisely plan project activities before the beginning of a project because certain activities are very dependent on weather conditions. Activities are also dependent on seasons. Par conséquent, if particular activity was not done on time, c'est à dire. in a particular season, it would be done only next year.
What role does the advisor or advisory service play with the practical case?
Advisers of Lithuanian Agricultural Advisory Service (DERNIER) were responsible for analysis of tendencies of condition of soil and soil compaction in the regions of the country. Advisers of LAAS were responsible for collection of data about technologies of tillage and growing applied on the farms. Advisers provided data about impact of the innovation on productivity of plants. Responsibility of advisers was to prepare scientific articles for publication, participate in field days and disseminate results of the project. Advisers of LAAS provide consultations and are in a direct contact with farmers therefore, they shared their expertise with farmers during the time of implementation of the project.
