Quel a été le défi/problème abordé?
Observations shows that small agricultural businesses are lacking targeted long-term support in business development and transition to next level of growth. Existing business incubators support and advise all start-ups except agricultural businesses. As oldest (established on 1991) and largest advisory service provider in Latvia who is working with all type of agriculture businesses, Centre letton de conseil et de formation en milieu rural (LRATC) has noticed that small agricultural businesses have short-term thinking and many of them are not able to set up long-term vision, targets and do not have a know-how in using only those resources they are obtaining. After small scale experiments LRATC decided to start pilot project of incubator for agricultural businesses. The aim of the incubator is to provide comprehensive support to small and medium agricultural businesses in order to broaden their level of knowledge and awareness about existing technical solutions, sector innovations, market needs and possibilities. To reach the main objective of the incubation process – support agricultural businesses in their development and growth, thorough coaching is provided.

Quels sont les facteurs de succès pour résoudre le problème?

Leçons apprises
1) As the method is new, it is hard to convince farmers that they need the incubation process, that it will bring more positive aspects than negative.
2) Farmers are skeptical and are not ready for this method. They are not ready to admit that they lack knowledge in building and running successful agricultural business.
3) It is hard for clients (and experts as well) that they cannot see the immediate results, as sometimes it is just confidence of new point of view they have obtained. These results are not measurable. Farmer discovers that something has shifted only after a while.
4) It is hard to build a trust among client and experts/ coaches. If the first impression is bad client starts hiding important information about the existing situation and it is nearly impossible to provide targeted help.
5) It takes time to set up experts team and get it working smoothly. They need to taught how to work in one team and trust each other.
6) Experts need to be trained in coaching methods.
7) It takes time to change a habits and thinking.
