The project aims to improve sustainable forest management and the regional

use of wood in order to increase the climate protection effects and sustainable development of climate-resilient and high-growth mixed forests in the target region. The regional CO2 avoidance and storage effects of the entire regional value chain (including timber construction and wood energy) are to be scientifically analysed and balanced

analysed and balanced. This is based on a new system boundary for regional C02 balancing

(cradle2prosumer), whereby all climate-related effects of regional forest management, wood supply and use are included. This includes not only the agricultural sector (Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry -LULUCF), but also the building and energy sector. By including the downstream sectors, the further development of risky timber stocks in the forest is avoided and the positive effects of a proactive forest conversion to climate-resilient mixed stands are shown, which are necessary in the long term to maintain the CO2 storage function of the forests.

Kā jūs atrisinājāt problēmu?

As part of the proposed projext, the newly founded OG is to scientifically model the GHG balance framework for the effects in the forest and when using wood in the region (LCA cradle2prosumer) and formulate a concept for marketable, tradable CO2 certificates (corresponding to EU-ETS). Papildus, the willingness of interested companies and end customers in the target region is to be examined in order to ensure the greatest possible participation in the implementation of regional CO2 accounting in the target region.

The GHG balancing of the entire forest and wood sector, taking into account the resulting substitution effects as part of a prospective consequential LCA, has never before been carried out in a regionally defined area in Germany. Southeast Upper Bavaria, a planning region (spatial planning region no. 18) in Bavaria, was chosen as the regional area framework in which “balanced living and economic relationships are to be maintained or developed in accordance with the Bavarian State Development Program (LEP).
