The project aims to support farmers in the sustainable management of the Wicklow & Dublin Uplands, covering approx. 35,000ha of upland area. The SUAS project was developed by local stakeholders, and focuses overcoming local challenges, which hassled to good bur-in from local farmers. This is the first time commonages are being dealt with as a collective in Ireland as opposed to individual farmers and requires the formation of formal Commonage Groups to allow farmers make collective decisions and follow a single management plan for the whole commonage. The project will deliver a template for future agri-environment schemes for upland areas, with an emphasis on rewarding farmers actually delivering habitat management.

Idea was developed from the bottom up over a long number of years which generated good bu-in from prospective participants and other stakeholders. A large element of trust and solidarity was built up during this process.
