Jakie było wyzwanie/problem?

In practice, there are several obstacles to the use and dissemination of precision farming in Austria’s small-scale agricultural sector. In addition to the high acquisition costs for the technical equipment, it is often necessary to use services to generate application maps if the farms lack the time and know-how for information and communication technologies. Ponadto, there is a lack of independent comparisons between the numerous processes and products offered by technology and software providers on the market. Ponadto, the ecological effect achieved by precision farming is not recognized under the current ÖPUL funding guidelines (Austrian programme for the promotion of environmentally friendly, extensive agriculture that protects the natural habitat). Last but not least, there are often doubts about the benefits of precision farming systems. The project addresses this situation and aims to develop adapted methods for precision farming and make them available to farmers, taking into account the small-scale and heterogeneous nature of agriculture in Austria. The aim is to raise awareness of the economic and ecological potential of precision farming systems

Jak rozwiązałeś problem??

The project has shown that ecological benefits can be achieved through site-specific fertilization. In some field trials, a reduction in fertilizer use of up to 15 kg/ha was achieved with the same yield, and in some sub-areas even higher quality was achieved. Map generation based on satellite images is feasible and practical thanks to the software generated in the project. The smartphone application makes it possible to implement the map material independently of the technology available on the farms. As part of the field trials on the pilot farms, the software was tested in practical use and a database for future fertilizer recommendations in the different climatic regions of Austria was developed.

Co jest innowacyjne w Twoim praktycznym przypadku?

practical instructions for implementing site-specific farming methods for agricultural business structures. In the long term, the increased use of precision farming technologies should lead to more efficient use of operating resources, such as fertilizers, pesticides and fuel, while at the same time reducing the burden on the environment

Jakie są czynniki sukcesu w rozwiązaniu problemu?

Collaboration between Josephinum Research, eight farmers and the Lower Austrian Chamber of Agriculture. Working together to find new technical possibilities for practical application. All software developed in the project will be made available to farmers free of charge. The software required to generate the maps will be made available as a download or as an Android smartphone application via the Google Play Store.

Zdobyta wiedza

In the GIS-ELA project, all set targets were achieved and even exceeded, which was made possible by the extension of the project duration. This enabled additional knowledge to be gained and an improved overall result to be achieved. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, results were successfully processed, communicated and knowledge disseminated

Zarządzanie projektami:

The planning and execution of the complex project was successfully implemented, including adherence to schedules and budgets.

Flexibility and adaptability were crucial, especially in the face of unforeseen events such as the pandemic.

Communication and knowledge dissemination:

Various communication channels were used effectively to disseminate project results.

Webinars and digital events served as an alternative to face-to-face events, which was particularly important during the pandemic.

Technical expertise:

GIS technologies (QGIS plug-ins) were successfully applied and integrated to create fertilizer maps.

Dealing with ISOBUS terminals and the corresponding agricultural technology was mastered, despite initial problems with missing activation codes.

Problem solving:

Technical problems were identified and solved, as during the field tests in spring 2019.

Preparation and communication of results:

Project results were prepared and presented in an understandable and appealing form.

Feedback and findings were used to continuously improve the project work.

Cooperation and networking:

Contacts with new, external partners and experts were established and maintained.

Cooperation with various agricultural businesses and institutions was central.

Innovative capacity:

New issues and ideas were identified and developed to support future projects.

A culture of continuous development and innovation was promoted.

Adherence to the cost plan:

All planned milestones were achieved in terms of content and on time. The cost plan was adhered to and the overall budget was even undercut.

Continuous further development:

New issues and challenges were identified during project implementation, which are to be pursued in new projects. Standing still means going backwards; continuous further development through research, practice, consulting and education is therefore necessary.
