What was the challenge/ problem that was addressed? 

Pruning of vines: Lack of specialist workers to perform the task correctly, increasing ecological and economic problems due to climate change require the task to be applied correctly. 

How did you solve the problem? 

AI based AR support system running on smartphones to enable everyone to prune vines in an adequate way. 

What are the success factors in solving the problem? 

The close cooperation of practitioners (winemakers), IT (AI, CV, AR) experts (university) and experienced project managers in an agile process. 

Unexpected fails if any 

Lack of documentation, quality and usable software interfaces for generally suitable smart glasses.

What role does the advisor or advisory service play within the practical case? 

For the success of the projects, it’s very important that the lead partner permanently and actively connects scientists (university) and practitioners (winemakers), forces the prototype in development to be tested often by the practitioners and explains the evaluation results to the scientists – somehow as a continuous translator between technology and practice. 

Can your approach be transferred and/or adapted for other innovation challenges and regions?
