What was the challenge/problem addressed?
Intensify transhumance activity by having more sheep breeders sending their sheep north during the summer months, train young shepherds, recover mountain pasture land for sheep grazing. Main actors were sheep breeder, cooperatives, livestock-associations, local authorities, VET-centers, trainers.
How did you solve the problem?
Presentation of results of former years; reports with exact figures by the different actors; scientific research as back-up; personal conversations with the actors in their farms, offices, etc.
What is innovative in your practical case?
service for sheep breeders; business for local authorities by leasing their land; labour opportunities; ecological improvement for farms in origin and mountains; difference: transversal implication.
What are the success factors in solving the problem?
personal involvement; creating facts and figures; presenting real experiences presented by the actors themselves; matching the sectors: economy, ecology, farming, science, sociooccupational aspects.
Lessons learned
Communication skills on a transversal level; connecting the sectors farming – mountain meadows – shepherds – science – transport – logistics. Design of a structure, system do deal with all details; bring transhumance back into society’s consciousness; honour a national culture;
What role does the advisor or advisory service play with the practical case?
Facilitator between actors
Can your approach be transferred and/or adapted for other innovation challenges and regions?
Yes
Estimated transferability on a scale from 1 to 5
