What was the challenge/problem addressed?

how to produce quality timber by integrating the entire forest-industry value chain while creating innovative tools and caring for the forest.

How did you solve the problem?

Generating tools that revalue the wood of two important species in Spain (maritime Pinus pinaster and beech). Integrating knowledge, latest forestry technologies and divulgation.

What is innovative in your practical case?

Innovative use of technology, new protocols that standardize wood products for use according to current legislation, new tools for forest management.

What are the success factors in solving the problem?

shared knowledge and partners with different expertise. Inclusion of public managers. The traceability of the study from the forest (tree) to the industry (board). Working with a different point of view from the usual in forest management.

Lessons learned

More time should be allowed for the dissemination of the project. Timber companies are not very reluctant to update their technology. Each forest species needs its own development in projects of this type.

What role does the advisor or advisory service play with the practical case?

To generate knowledge and create tools for better forest management. Use the technologies that exist in other fields where they have not been used.

Can your approach be transferred and/or adapted for other innovation challenges and regions?

Yes

Estimated transferability on a scale from 1 to 5

(where 1 is easy and 5 very difficult)
