What was the challenge/problem addressed?
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.
How did you solve the problem?
In 2024, the theme is “Forests and innovation: New solutions for a better world”.
What is innovative in your practical case?
It is a call to action to harness technological innovations for our forests to address the growing threat of deforestation, habitat degradation and climate change.
What are the success factors in solving the problem?
Key messages of this year’s campaign include: forest monitoring systems to monitor and report on forests; technological innovations, such as drones, are key in the fight against forest fires and deforestation; mapping and safeguarding ancestral lands can conserve their biodiversity; and forest products help create alternatives to sustainable materials such as steel, plastics and synthetic fibres.
Lessons learned
Celebrating International Forest Day is a positive way to reinforce sustainable forest management.
Choosing innovation as the theme for this year 2024 is a good choice that allows us to see forests as spaces where people live and also need to improve their livelihood.
What role does the advisor or advisory service play with the practical case?
Awareness is the key word for advisors, regarding this International Day of Forests. They can use this day’s events and activities for networking and to promote their advisory services.
Can your approach be transferred and/or adapted for other innovation challenges and regions?
