What was the challenge/problem addressed?
Cereal production in Spain is characterized by reduced profits and low environmental sustainability.
Therefore, the aim is to improve its environmental and economic sustainability through all the members of its chain, promoting environmental quality labels that provide greater added value.
How did you solve the problem?
Adapt and promote innovative technologies among farmers and society in general that promote profitable and sustainable wheat production, while reducing its impact on climate change.
What is innovative in your practical case?
The innovation is based on combining sustainable practices and new technologies to increase wheat production, improve its economy and reduce its level of greenhouse gas emissions
What are the success factors in solving the problem?
Farmers have managed to reduce their production costs by almost 10%, also increasing their harvests, providing a greater economic benefit. Furthermore, GHG emissions have been reduced by about 25%.
Lessons learned
It has been possible to demonstrate how these systems work throughout Spain and are very well received by farmers. On the other hand, the low emission wheat certification developed favors a production of proven quality that improves the positioning of the product.
What role does the advisor or advisory service play with the practical case?
Promote the development and implementation of these technologies based on best agricultural practices focused on reducing the GHG emissions from cereal at european level.
Can your approach be transferred and/or adapted for other innovation challenges and regions?
Yes
