What was the challenge/problem addressed?
It is a challenge to establish stable perennial greenings in vineyards. Extreme conditions with high temperatures, low humidity and steep slopes lead to difficult growing conditions. Especially for perennial crops with a slow juvenile development it is necessary to find a way to establish them under protected conditions. The seeding is one of the critical points. Using nurse crops is a proven tool for agriculture and with adapted mixtures it works for vineyards, too.
What are the success factors in solving the problem?
• Adaptation of the greening strategy to the local conditions and requirements of the local winegrowers.
• Adaptation while applying the new greening system.
• Demonstrating in practice that the idea of the greening works.
What were the main challenges during the innovation process?
• Concerns of the winegrowers on water competition between the cover crops and the vines.
• Extreme weather events caused by climate change.
What role does the advisor or advisory service play with the practical case?
Knowledge awareness and exchange, Advisory, consultancy and backstopping aimed at solving complex problems, to be provided during the innovation process and based on demands of actors and the co-construction of solutions, Demand articulation, to allow actors to have access to new ideas, identify their needs, define their objectives and express clear demands to other actors, Networking facilitation and brokerage, to help organize or strengthen networks, improve the relationships between key actors and to align services in order to be able to complement each other
